Campervan or Motorhome for a Morocco Road Trip?

Campervan, panel van conversion or motorhome: the differences, size, electricity, roads and our tips to choose your vehicle and hire a motorhome in Marrakech.

Campervan, panel van conversion, motorhome: these words describe similar vehicles, but not quite the same ones. Before you rent for a Morocco road trip, it helps to know what each term covers and which size suits Moroccan roads, towns and overnight stops. Here is our guidance, based on our experience of renting from Marrakech.

Campervan, panel van conversion, motorhome: what is the difference?

  • Motorhome is the general term for a vehicle you can live in: you drive, sleep and cook in it. It comes in several formats, from compact van conversions to large coachbuilt, over-cab or A-class models, which are wider and taller.
  • A panel van conversion is a motorhome built from a commercial van: the original bodywork is kept and the inside is fitted out (beds, kitchen, storage, sometimes a shower and toilet).
  • Campervan is the everyday name, often used for the most compact van conversions. Depending on the vehicle, it may be officially approved as a motorhome or simply converted: the approval shown on the vehicle documents is what officially makes it a motorhome.

Our van is both: a panel van conversion in a campervan format, officially approved as a motorhome.

What really matters on Moroccan roads

Size

A large motorhome gives you more space on board, but it is wider, taller and longer. In Morocco, that matters: village crossings, narrow streets around the medinas, winding mountain roads such as the Tizi n’Tichka pass. A panel van conversion keeps dimensions close to a commercial van, which are easier to handle day to day. Either way, you never drive into the medinas: park outside. Our road tips are in our guide to driving in Morocco by campervan.

Parking

Guarded car parks in towns, campsites on the coast and in the Atlas: a compact vehicle finds a space more easily. For overnight stops, read our guide on where to sleep in a campervan in Morocco.

Electricity and water

Whatever its size, a motorhome is not a house. In our van, the fridge and the electric hobs run on 220 V: you need to plug in, usually at a campsite. Plan regular campsite nights to hook up to electricity and refill the water tank. A backup stove is provided.

Roads and tracks

Like most motorhomes, our van is designed for tarmac roads. Avoid dirt tracks, sand and fords: it is not a 4×4. The road network already links the Atlantic coast, the Atlas mountains and the edge of the desert.

Our Fiat Ducato: an approved motorhome in a campervan format

  • 2026 Fiat Ducato, officially approved as a motorhome;
  • 3 certified seats and 3 berths;
  • equipped kitchen: fridge, microwave, 2 electric hobs, sink and utensils;
  • indoor shower (cold water) and toilet;
  • 220 V and 12 V sockets, Wi-Fi, 30 m extension cable and water hose;
  • camping furniture: 4 chairs, table and foldable barbecue.

All the equipment and photos are on the our campervan page.

Campervan or large motorhome: which to choose?

  • You are 2 or 3 and want easy driving, easy parking in town and to go from the coast to the Atlas: a panel van conversion like ours is a good compromise.
  • You are more than 3: our van only has 3 certified seats, so you need a larger vehicle.
  • You want plenty of space on board and will mostly drive on main roads: a larger motorhome can suit you, with less easy driving and parking.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is a campervan a motorhome?

Not always. Campervan is an everyday name; the vehicle’s official approval is what makes it a motorhome. Our Fiat Ducato is officially approved as a motorhome, with 3 seats and 3 berths.

Which licence do I need to drive your motorhome?

A category B (car) licence is enough. The driver must be at least 25 years old and have held the licence for at least 5 years.

Is the van self-sufficient in electricity?

Not fully. The fridge and the electric hobs run on 220 V: plan to plug in regularly, usually at a campsite. A backup stove is provided.

Can I drive the van on dirt tracks?

No. The van is designed for tarmac roads: avoid dirt tracks, sand and fords.
