Morocco Surf Trip by Campervan: Taghazout, Imsouane and Essaouira

Spots, seasons, levels, route and nights in the van: our guide to a Morocco surf trip by campervan, from Marrakech to Taghazout and Imsouane.

Morocco's Atlantic coast is one of the most accessible surf destinations from Europe: waves for every level, plenty of winter sunshine and surf villages just a few hours' drive from Marrakech. With a campervan, you follow the swell from one spot to the next, without being tied to fixed accommodation. Here is our guide to planning your surf trip: the spots around Essaouira, Imsouane and Taghazout, the best season, a sample itinerary and our practical tips.

The surf trip at a glance

  • Start: Marrakech, or Marrakech-Menara airport (car park P2, by appointment).
  • Route: Marrakech → Essaouira → Imsouane → Taghazout → back to Marrakech.
  • Recommended length: 7 to 10 days to surf without rushing.
  • Wave season: autumn to spring, with the most powerful swells in winter. Summer is gentler and ideal for beginners.
  • Return: from the Agadir area, the motorway takes you back to Marrakech in about 3 hours (around 250 km).

Distances and times are approximate: check your route on a navigation app on the day.

When to surf in Morocco

  • Autumn to spring (roughly September–October to March–April): the main season. North Atlantic swells arrive regularly and the point breaks come alive. Winter brings the biggest and most powerful waves, which on some spots are for experienced surfers only.
  • Autumn is often described as a sweet spot: consistent waves that are still manageable, and pleasant temperatures.
  • Summer (May to August): smaller, gentler waves, perfect for beginners and longboarding. It is windier, especially around Essaouira, where summer is kitesurfing and windsurfing season.

Water temperature: it stays cool all year, around 16 to 20 °C in winter and a little warmer in summer according to most sources. Bring a wetsuit: a 3/2 mm works most of the time, a 4/3 mm is more comfortable in midwinter.

Stop 1 — Essaouira and around

Two and a half to three hours' drive from Marrakech, Essaouira is your first gateway to the ocean. Three areas to know:

  • Essaouira bay: a long sandy beach, generally suited to beginners and surf schools. The wind often picks up in the afternoon, so surf in the morning.
  • Sidi Kaouki, to the south: a more exposed beach that picks up more swell. It is usually recommended for intermediate and advanced surfers.
  • Moulay Bouzerktoun, to the north: best known for kitesurfing and windsurfing thanks to very steady wind. Surfing is possible in some conditions, but the wind makes it tricky.

Take the time to visit Essaouira's medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. All our tips on the road and the town are in our Marrakech to Essaouira road trip guide.

Stop 2 — Imsouane, the long wave

Heading south along the coast, Imsouane is a small fishing village that has become a must for surfers in Morocco. Allow half a day's drive from Essaouira, including stops.

  • The Bay: a long, mellow right that peels along the bay, often described as one of the longest waves in the country. It is a go-to spot to learn, progress and longboard, and popular with surf schools.
  • Cathedral: on the other side of the village, a steeper and more demanding wave on its point break, better for intermediate and advanced surfers. Its beach break can suit a wider range of levels depending on conditions.

Imsouane is perfect for a two- or three-day break: a slow pace, fresh fish at the harbour and sunsets over the bay.

Stop 3 — Taghazout and Agadir bay

Another half day's drive south brings you to Taghazout, north of Agadir: Morocco's best-known surf village, with spots for every level just minutes apart.

  • Anchor Point: the most famous wave in the area, a long right that holds big winter swells. For experienced surfers.
  • Killer Point: a powerful, exposed point break for experienced surfers only.
  • Hash Point and Panoramas: more accessible spots in Taghazout itself, whose difficulty depends a lot on the day's conditions.
  • Banana Point and the beaches of Tamraght and Aourir, to the south: often gentler waves, popular with beginners and intermediates.

These levels are only a guide: swell size, tide and wind completely change how a spot behaves. If in doubt, ask a local surf school for advice before paddling out.

Sample 8-day itinerary

  1. Day 1: pick up the van in Marrakech and drive to Essaouira through the argan forest.
  2. Day 2: morning session in Essaouira or Sidi Kaouki, the medina in the afternoon.
  3. Day 3: coastal drive to Imsouane, first session on The Bay in the late afternoon.
  4. Day 4: a full surf day in Imsouane.
  5. Day 5: drive to Taghazout, evening session depending on conditions.
  6. Days 6 and 7: surf between Taghazout, Tamraght and Aourir, depending on your level and the swell.
  7. Day 8: back to Marrakech on the motorway.

With 10 days, add one or two buffer days: in Morocco as anywhere, the forecast decides.

The van, your surf base

Our campervan is designed for this kind of trip: 3 certified seats, sleeps 4, an equipped kitchen, an indoor shower (cold water) to rinse off after your session, a toilet and storage.

  • Surfboards welcome: tell us in your request how many boards you are bringing and their size, and we will advise you on the best way to carry them.
  • Electric hobs: the kitchen runs on electricity. An equipped campsite lets you plug in and refill the water tank.
  • Mileage and insurance included: follow the swell without counting the kilometres.
  • Several starting points: as well as Marrakech, the van can be delivered and returned in other cities, including Essaouira and Agadir, for an extra charge. All the details are on our prices and booking page.

Where to sleep by campervan on the coast

We recommend equipped campsites first, found around Essaouira, Imsouane and Taghazout. They let you plug in, refill water and sleep safely.

Otherwise, use an authorised parking area, such as a guarded car park. Wild camping is not permitted everywhere and rules can vary from one municipality to another and change over time: always check locally, follow the signs and never park on private land without permission. We share our recommendations at handover. To find out more, read our guide on where to sleep in a campervan in Morocco.

Practical tips for surfing in Morocco

  • Check the forecast every day (swell, wind, tide) and adapt your route.
  • Surf in the morning: the wind often picks up in the afternoon on the coast.
  • Respect priority rules and local surfers, especially on busy point breaks.
  • Bring booties: several spots have rocky bottoms and sea urchins.
  • Book a school or guide if you are a beginner or new to reef breaks.
  • Don't surf alone on exposed spots, and don't overestimate your level in winter.
  • Protect yourself from the sun: sunscreen, rash vest and hat, even when the air feels cool.
  • Don't drive at night and keep valuables out of sight in the van.
